About "Big Dogs" Answer

How to teach big dogs to beconsiderate of small dogssize?
I have a great dane and am getting a small dog (12 pounds). He is very considerate of other dogs when socializing. But- just in case I would like to ask anyone who has a big dog and small dog how they got there big dog to be considerate (not step on, not bite, and to be easy playing) of the small dog. I would like to know about how people taught their big dogs that. Also I would like to ask how to introduce a big dog to a small dog. We are getting our small dog second, since we already have a big dog. Does that make a difference? Thank you.
I used to have two grooming clients. One a great Dane (who has passed away) the other a Papillon (still with me). The Dane used to sit and whimper at the Papillon sitting in his second story drying cage. One day the owner of the Papillon asked if it would be OK to put her little dog down near the Dane for a picture. She did and the Dane was so thrilled he immediately dropped into the play posture, inviting the little guy to play. I have had several Danes over the years at the groom shop and have only ever seen the gentle side of these giants. A well socialized dog seem to always know what is appropriate to the size of the smaller babies. Just make sure that you introduce your Dane to the new baby outside of the home and then take them both back home together. Never just drop a new dog of any size into a home where an existing pet has residence.
Is it easier to have small orbig dogs while raising kids?
I LOVE big dogs, but I have always had small- medium dogs because they do better running around the house and wear out easier on walks. However, I am realizing that my theory is not accurate as some smaller dogs, like say a beagle are just have crazy energy and some bigger dogs, like Newfoundland dogs are lazy. Am I wrong to avoid bigger dogs while I have kids due to thinking that they are higher maintence?
As a serial multiple dog owner I have had both large and small dogs while raising kids. Managing kids and dogs is hard. I find larger dogs are more taxing in their needs and do find small dogs much easier, but you do have to be selective, I guess, just as you would have to be to find a big dog trustable with children. If you get a small dog from rescue you have the chance to know their character before bringing one home. Other than that, if you desire a puppy that will grow up small, then really study your breeds. I have found the spaniel breeds tend to be easy going and laid back and do well with kids. I have a Tibetan Spaniel/Cavalier mix who tolerates all the pulls and rough play from toddlers that can be thrown her way. I had a pure Tibbie in the past who was the same. I also have a purebred Cavalier Spaniel who tolerates a lot and doesn't ever nip, but prefers not to be bothered by children if they are being rough, and retires to his crate to avoid them. I know as well a couple of Shih Tzus the same way (not the tiny kind, but the originally sized 14 pound ones) and also a Shih Tzu/Bichon cross and a Cocker Spaniel that are amazing with kids. I do also know dogs of these breeds/mixes who are not. To get a small dog that is predictable in temperament, though, you REALLY need to get one from a good breeder who is temperament screening. Too many unscrupulous breeders of pure and mixed are not weeding out the bad temperaments which gives many small dogs a bad rap. . . . and big or small, dogs and kids should always be supervised while they are together. Please do not ever purchase a puppy, pure or mixed, from someone breeding in bulk, or from a breeder not doing the proper health testing on the parents, or caring for them as you would want your own pet cared for.
big dogs???
There are soooooooooo many people that get big dogs just to have them sit in the back yard all day, PLEASE HELP ME TO UNDERSTAND!! Cause it just makes me soooooo mad! I think that you should always take time to walk or play with your dog. People make me feel like I'm the crazy one, they will say "there just dogs". People still don't get that dogs have feelings!!! SORRY I GUESS I HAVE NO QUESTION I'M JUST UPSET WITH PEOPLE!!! I WISH MORE PEOPLE WOULD LOVE THERE ANIMALS LIKE I LOVE MINE!!
I know how you feel. I work in a shelter and we get in more big dogs than anything...The ones that comes from homes are usualy under socialized, needy, and in need of vet care. They often have *issues* just because of being ignored all of their lives. It seems by the time we make a break through with some of them the shelter gets Slammed full and we have to put the poor things down. Its sad.
