Is there a way to test toysfor lead paint? |
|
I just spent 75 dollars on toy
food from Constructive
Playthings.
My husband just noticed that
the food is made in China.
Is there a way for me to test
it for lead paint??? |
 |
TOYS:
The quickest / easiest way to
test paint on toys is to use a
product called "Lead Check".
They are small white tubes
that deliver a chemical
(sodium rodizinate) to the
surface.
If there is leach-able lead it
will turn color (pink or red).
Which means children should
not be allowed to chew or
mouth them.
HINT: They cost about $3.00
each BUT !!! (Lead Check hates
me to teach this) ... There
are 5 to 7 drops in each tube.
If you use a clean dry cotton
swab on each item, you can get
5 to 7 tests.
There are other brands that
deliver the chem but I prefer
"Lead Check".
HOUSE PAINT TESTING:
Paint is normally tested with
a device called an X-ray
Fluorescent Spectrum Analyzer
(XRF). The instrument is
placed against a painted
surface and, in a very short
time, will report the lead
content in all the layers of
paint. It causes no damage to
the paint or the surface.

ltc/lswp.pdf Its a book I
wrote for parents doing
re-modeling or having it done.
And lead issues in general. It
was paid for by a fed/state
grant. Which means its your
book as much as mine.
Education about this subject
is my job.

EDIT: For JIm above that says
"If the paint does not chip
off and not ingested by the
child, it poses very little
health risk. Lead based paint
poisoning is from ingesting of
paint chips on walls in older
buildings."
Incorrect.... There are about
400,000 children poisoned in
the country today. 99.9% of
these kids are NOT sick
because they ate paint chips
off walls. Their blood lead
level is high from ingesting
the "LEAD DUST" left on floors
by paint that is disturbed or
is failing.
Please read the first page of
the book above to see the
other "MYTHS" of this issue. |
