About "Time Life" Answer

Do nurses have time for apersonal life and time tostart and raise a family?
By personal life I mean time for dating, family and friends and by starting a family I mean getting married and having children. Can I have some info on a normal work week for a nurse? I know that hours are irregular.
Same thing Annabo said, only you DO have some control over your work schedule. Night nurses make more money but, unfortunately, it really screws up the days you have off. Some hospitals offer 12-hour shifts while others offer 8-hour shifts. Obviously, the 12-hour shifts are more exhausting but you really only need to do a few of them a week to be considered full time and get benefits. If you worked days, even if you did four 12-hour shifts a week, it would leave a litle bit of free time for dating, but not much more than that. The last day of your 12-hour shift you probably arent going to want to go out that night after work, and the night before you are scheduled to work 12 hours the next day would be a wash-out too. You wouldnt want to stay out late on a really good date if you knew you had to do a 12-hour shift the next morning. But, it's a schedule you should be able to adapt to and learn to work around. Most of the time, you can confer with the supervisor before she makes out the next schedule and let her know you need a particular day off for a family function (or whatever) and she should be able to just juggle your shifts around to accomodate. In the interest of fairness, hospital-based nurses are all expected to work a couple of weekend shifts each month, and you take your turn working holidays. So, if you're inspired enough to do it, being a nurse and having a social life IS possible, but most nurses I know are always too tired and just want to stay at home on their days off. As far as a "normal" work week....the only constant is that you either work days or nights. They dont make you rotate and do both. The days of the week that you work vary throughout the month, but some hospitals will allow you to turn in schedule requests (where you fill in the days you want yourself) and the scheduler will try to accomodate. Also, some hospitals will alow you to swap shifts with another nurse of equal training, as long as that doesnt put her into overtime. You have to be really good friends with this nurse though because if you work a shift for her and she doesnt show to work the make up shift for you, it is YOU who is held responsible. I have known many nurses who started families while working and even some who continued to work while they were pregnant. (Depending on the unit you work, I wouldnt advise it---for the health of your baby and yourself) Anyway, the short answer would be YES but it requires you to be able to compromise and adapt.
